Inspiredbydominic Designs: Inspiring Me to Inspire You

Thoughts of the Moment

March 01, 2014

Last week I talked about motivation and deadlines. While I work the best under pressure, I also need organization, otherwise the pressure gets to be too much! For this I use a variety of organizational methods.

Google Drive - I create spreadsheets in my Google Drive for kit ideas by month, design goals, and checklists to complete for each kit. These allow me to move through each section of the kit quickly without getting stuck wondering what to create or when.

Todoist - Todoist is a fun app for your computer and your phone. You can add an extension to your browser to check your todolist while on the computer or an app for your phone. I use the free version. It allows me to create projects so that I can view my project-to-dos alone, daily to-do lists, weekly lists, and more. It's great for keeping me on track daily.

Notebooks and Planners - Despite having spreadsheets and fantastic apps to use, I still find myself going back to my planner and writing a detailed list for my design time. I just love crossing items off one at a time. These lists are usually broken into 15 minute segments: 15 minutes of housework/decluttering, 15-30 minutes of specific design work with a goal such as 5 papers/10 elements, and 15 minutes of ME TIME. If designing is going well I extend my design time and shift any housework or me time to later in the day. If it's not I clean a bit more to allow myself to find my inspiration. It's amazing what you can get done in 15 minutes with a specific goal in mind.

How do you keep organized?

Wednesday Went Back for ALPHAS!

February 26, 2014

I have tons of retiring alphabets right now for only 99 cents each!

I love creating alphabets. My very first design was a watery alphabet for a beach layout.

The first alphabet shown below is a soft rainbow and white paper alpha set to match my Four Leaves collection.

alt

The second is one of my very favorites. The shiny blue acrylic circiles are perfect for initialed pages.

alt

The Learn with Me Alphas include a white glued acrylic alphabet and a scribbed paper alphabet.

alt

When I created the stick boy alphabet I made a fun doodled alpha with randomly cut paper bits.

alt

The Dandelion Dreams alphabet set includes 3 different alphas: blue skies paper alpha, dotted green fabric alpha, and a checkered acrylic alphabet.

Grab them now for only 99 cents!

Thoughts of the Moment

February 22, 2014

In looking back over my years of designing and scrapping I've found it isn't always easy to do either. Sometimes kits or layouts seem to flow from my fingertips straight onto the computer screen with very little effort. It's as if they create themselves. Other days I find myself staring at Photoshop willing one of my ideas to take shape. In the end, it all comes down to motivation and inspiration.

Personally, I work the absolute best when I have a deadline looming over my head. Deadlines give me the motivation to pull every drop of inspiration available to create something fabulous and quickly. Without a deadline, I'm often unable to choose what to do next. Ideas swarm through my head swirling and whirling like leaves in the wind. I feel like a small child jumping and trying to grasp onto the perfect leaf, the leaf that will direct my next design. It's hard to decide where to start when I have too much time on my hands to think about it. On rare days a gentle breeze deposits the perfect starting point right into my lap and the kit or layout begins. Other times an idea begins to take shape only to swiftly fly away, sitting unfinished in a folder on my desktop.

What is scrapping or designing like for you? Do ideas flow easily or do they flow swiftly like a faucet turned on too far? What motivates you or inspires you?

Wednesday Went Back

February 19, 2014

Today I want to take a moment to talk about a few of my older products. I'll be sharing ideas on how to use one of my commercial use products and my inspiration behind one of my personal use/scrap4hire products. Check it out! Click the images to see them out in my store.

Write on Me Volume 1 and 2 are layered templates to make fun doodled tags and journaling elements. Here are some of my favorite ways to use them:

  • Remove tag holes to make journaling mats
  • Add a style to the doodle to create a puffed paint or embossed look
  • Love glitter? Fill the doodle layer with glitter and add some sparkles
  • Distress and use only the doodled layer to create a rub-on
  • Add a drop shadow to Vol. 1 to create a layered paper tag
  • Use only on of the paper layers for a simpler mat
  • Add and warp a shadow to create a tag that is pulling up from your paper

I come back to these packs often and find it simple to make something new and different each time. How would you make it unique?

Four Leaves is a lucky collection, perfect to scrap all of your St. Patrick's Day adventures. I created Four Leaves for Scrapbook-Bytes Grab-A-Byte event a few years ago. This year it will be retiring and leaving stores forever. Grab it now for only 99 cents!

When I started creating Four Leaves, I wanted to capture my favorite parts of St. Patrick's Day from the four-leaf clovers, to the clover flower itself, to the glitter and gold. However, I wanted to pull back from the darker, brighter greens used in most kits to something softer. I spent hours deciding how I wanted to show off the fluffly clover flowers (with bubbly acrylic of course). I loved making elements shimmer and shine. It was a truly enjoyable collection and I hope you will enjoy it too!

Happy DSD!

If you are looking for the SBB Guess Who Blog Hop you can either scroll down just a bit to the next post or click here to go directly to that post.

Every year at this time I think about how lucky I am to be part of such an amazing community of scrappers and designers. I stumbled onto digital scrapbooking in 2005 when my oldest was first born. It was the PERFECT way to get so many memories down easily and with less mess. I was addicted pretty much instantly. In 2008, I started trying to design some things for myself to fill in items I wanted, but couldn't quite find. At first, this involved a lot of alphabets to match my layouts. Eventually, I made pretty good progress with my designing skills thanks to some amazing mentors (Heather and Dielle I can't thank you enough for taking time to chat with me, share ideas, and critique my work). I started selling my designs in 2008 and I've never looked back. It's been over 5 years now. Time really flies! DSD and iNSD have always been my favorite days of the year though because that is when I get to chat with everyone, get to know new people, and make new digi-friends. I truly cherish those times and I'm incredibly thankful for all of you. THANK YOU!

To partially show my thanks I'm offering some coupons, IN ADDITION TO MY 35% off sale, to make your shopping a bit less expensive.

Color Play - Color Shift

August 26, 2013

It's color play time again! Here is how it works. Each week I post a new color palette and some inspiration for you. Please feel free to use my color palettes in your kits and projects, no credit required. If you do use one of my palettes, I would love to see how you used it so feel free to link your layout or project here. I hope you enjoy them.

Color Play: Color Shift

alt

This color palette has been inspired by markers. In the jumble of school supplies there are always TONS of markers. The first thing I do is lay them out in rainbow order, in fact, I organize my closet the same way. It makes it much easier to find my favorite clothes. When I saw the blues, greens, and golds together I knew that this would be a gorgeous kit. I hope you enjoy it as well. It's hard for me to believe that it's finally time to pack up all of those markers and backpacks and send my boys back to school for the year. Summer went by way too quickly.

Your inspiration? markers, blues, greens, golds, organization, and the beginning of the school year

Color Play - Apples

August 19, 2013

It's color play time again! Here is how it works. Each week I post a new color palette and some inspiration for you. Please feel free to use my color palettes in your kits and projects, no credit required. If you do use one of my palettes, I would love to see how you used it so feel free to link your layout or project here. I hope you enjoy them.

Color Play: Apples

alt

This color palette has been inspired by the end of summer creeping up and the beginnings of autumn. One of my favorite parts of the new school year, besides the school supplies, is apples. The apples taste the very best at this time of the year. They are fragrant and filled with delicious juice. In my preschool class we do an apple tasting every year. Everyone loves it. My family and I always use this as an excuse to head out to a local orchard to try to collect our own apples. There is nothing better than an apple picked fresh from a tree.

Your inspiration? apples, back to school, apple orchards, and favorites

Color Play - Jumble

August 12, 2013

It's color play time again! Here is how it works. Each week I post a new color palette and some inspiration for you. Please feel free to use my color palettes in your kits and projects, no credit required. If you do use one of my palettes, I would love to see how you used it so feel free to link your layout or project here. I hope you enjoy them.

Color Play: Jumble

alt

This color palette has been inspired by the jumble of school supplies that have slowly begun to collect on my desk. I LOVE new school supplies. I always have. I can remember being a child and looking forward to new notebooks, crayons, and markers. I even love the SMELL of new school supplies. Freshly cut paper, newly opened crayons, the slightly sour scent of fresh crayola markers... strange I know, lol. Now that I'm a teacher and a parent myself I'm also excited about all of the sales for school supplies, because we sure do buy a LOT. Both boys need supplies and then supplies for my classroom beyond what is provided. It all adds up rather quickly. So even though my desk is a jumble of school supplies, it's a good jumble.

Your inspiration? school supplies, notebooks, cluttered desks, and the little things that make us happy
